About the data

NPI Registry Lookup makes the national NPI registry easy to search and browse. It covers 9,531,103 active National Provider Identifiers.

Sources

• NPPES Data Dissemination file, published monthly by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services: every NPI with the provider's name, credentials, addresses, phone numbers, taxonomy codes, license numbers, authorized official and dates, plus other practice locations and other organization names.
• Health Care Provider Taxonomy, from the National Uniform Claim Committee: the names and definitions of the taxonomy codes.

Updates

We load the full NPPES file each month. Data last updated Nov 3, 2026.

What we change

Nothing about the substance of a record. We put names and addresses in normal capitalization (NPPES stores most in capitals), standardize city names so a city's providers appear together, and group providers by their primary taxonomy code. Credentials are shown as the provider entered them.

What it doesn't show

An NPI doesn't show whether a provider is licensed, board-certified, accepting patients or in any insurance network, and it isn't a rating. For those, check the state licensing board, the provider and your insurer.
